Brett Scott is an author, journalist and financial hacker exploring the intersections between money systems, finance and digital technology. In 2013 he published The Heretic’s Guide to Global Finance: Hacking the Future of Money with Pluto Press, and has a new book forthcoming about the ‘war on cash’, digital money, fintech and alternative currency with PenguinRandomhouse and HarperCollins. He has spoken at over 250 events in 30 countries, has written for publications like The Guardian, New Scientist, Huffington Post, Wired Magazine and CNN.com, and has appeared in a wide range of TV shows, radio broadcasts and documentaries.
Brett did a degree in anthropology in South Africa and a Masters degree in international development at Cambridge University (UK), and worked in the world of financial derivatives in the midst of the 2008 financial crisis. Since then he has worked on building financial reform campaigns and alternative finance projects with a wide range of groups. He is a Senior Fellow of the Finance Innovation Lab (UK), an Associate at the Institute of Social Banking (Germany), and an advisory group member of the Brixton Pound local currency. He was also a winner of the 2016/2017 Ethics and Trust in Finance Global Prize, run by Observatoire de la Finance and the CFA Institute. He publishes the Altered States of Monetary Consciousness newsletter about monetary visualization.
