Economist

Dr. Mary Wrenn

Dr. Mary Wrenn originally hails from the United States where she was an Associate Professor of Economics until 2011, when she decided to uproot her life and move to the UK to take up the position of the Joan Robinson Research Fellow in Heterodox Economics at Girton College, University of Cambridge.  At the end of that Fellowship, Mary moved to Bristol and took up the position of Senior Lecturer with the Economics faculty at UWE.

She is an internationally recognized scholar and prolific researcher on the topic of neoliberalism.  She is particularly interested in exploring the ontological dimensions of neoliberalism as expressed and experienced through personal agency, identity, emotions, and care.  Her latest series of single-authored papers explores cultural movements in the US which epitomize the unrelenting optimism of Americans and the connection of those movements to the evolution of capitalism and its political institutions beginning at the turn of the twentieth century through the present day.  She is also interested in the applicability and continuing relevance of economic and political thought developed under capitalism, but prior to the ideological advance of neoliberalism. Her recent work in this research stream focuses on the economics of Karl Polanyi and Thorstein Veblen.
